I am a man that is married to a Ukrainian Woman. But for all intent and purposes, she grew up under as a Russian. During her early years, Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union.

Long ago when I was pondering the thought of starting a international relationship, I really did not know what I was getting myself into. I had no knowledge of the culture difference. I did the normal study of facts and read a lot on the country, but I can assure you that there is not one book written by an American that can fully capture the uniqueness of the Russian or Ukrainian culture.

I found myself completely out of my element. Dating in the Ukraine or Russia is a lot different than in the U.S.A. I did have friends that were Russian and Ukrainian, but there were already Americanized and really did not prepare me for my international experience. Plus they were already all married, so dating one of them was completely out of the question.

My classroom was the country of Ukraine. I learned how to court a woman as a Russian man would court a woman. I learned that kissing, hugging and just holding hands was not really appropriate in the beginning of the relationship.

This was a surprise to me. Just a simple hug or holding hands was something I could not do until we got to know each other better. Great conversation was the only thing I could rely on when I met my wife.

A myth that was quickly dismissed was Russian Women are submissive to their boyfriends or husbands. They are quite the opposite, but in a good way. They are respectful, but also have a mind of their own. I quickly learned how wrong I was to believe in this myth.

A man may learn this even more so when he brings his fiance home to the USA. Yet even with the disproven myth, her resolve and dedication to the marriage and you are two things that you will want to hear from her. The best intentions of the family are always in her mind and heart.

It is a long journey to starting a relationship with a Russian Woman. It takes a lot of patience and understanding. You will experience that part of the relationship once you fill out the K1 Visa application to bring her home to you. The process can be trying at times and long, but well worth the effort.

Finally I learned that if you can win a Russian woman’s heart, she will be forever yours. There is something magical about falling in love with a Russian Woman. Their beauty does not stop at just the outside, but actually travels from the heart outward. It is the inner beauty that will keep the relationship and marriage bond strong.

Work on building the relationship between just the two of you in the beginning and don’t try to grow the family until you are stable and settled in your new lives together. Often times building the family too soon can lead a lack of focus on each other.
